It was the learned Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) — lexicographer, poet, essayist, biographer, literary critic, and moralist (in short, “arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history,” according to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography) who uttered that famous line on April 7, 1775. The previous year, Johnson had published a pamphlet entitled, The Patriot, which was a searing critique of false patriotism which he despised.

From the comedy performance “Life is Worth Losing” by American comedian and social critic George Carlin (1937-2008). This was Carlin’s 13th HBO special and 18th album. The show and album were recorded at the Beacon Theater in New York in November 2005.
