Forget Yourself

alex atkins bookshelf quotationsDevelop an interest in life as you see it; the people, things, literature, music — the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls, and interesting people. Forget yourself.

Henry Miller (1891-1980), American writer best known for his salacious semi-autographical novels, like Tropic of Capricorn (published in 1961) and The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (Sexus, Nexus, and Plexus), that were banned for obscenity in the United States. In a famous ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court (Grove Press, Inc. v. Gerstein), declared Miller’s Tropic of Capricorn a work of literature, ushering in the sexual revolution in the country from 1960-1980s. All of which explains why Miller uses the verb “throbbing” rather than a less provocative verb like “filled” or “pulsating.”
